In a significant stride toward community development and sustainability, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) have jointly launched the Kesiswa Social Entrepreneurship Aquaponics Project. This innovative initiative, taking place at the Al-Mashyor Mosque in Padang Siding, Perlis, is set to unfold from September 15, 2023, to July 15, 2024. The project is spearheaded by Encik Iskandar bin Adon and Cik Fatin Athirah Fadzillah, under the auspices of the Social Entrepreneurship Unit at the Cooperative and Entrepreneurship Development Institute (CEDI), Universiti Utara Malaysia. This collaborative project is designed to fortify the socio-economic fabric of the local community, particularly targeting low-income households and vulnerable youth. By integrating aquaponic systems—a sustainable method of synergistic fish and plant farming—this initiative aims to enhance local food security and economic resilience.

A pivotal component of the project is the introduction of retort food packaging technology. This method involves cooking food, which is then hermetically sealed in specially designed airtight containers that withstand high temperatures, thereby extending the shelf life of the products without the need for refrigeration or chemical preservatives. The technology is poised to revolutionize the way food is stored and distributed within the community, offering a sustainable solution to food preservation challenges.

The project's strategy includes engaging local residents, particularly women and at-risk youth, in the production of retort-packaged meals. This not only provides them with valuable skills and economic opportunities but also integrates them into a broader entrepreneurial ecosystem, promoting community solidarity and self-reliance.

Beyond technological implementation, the Kesiswa Aquaponics Project encompasses a series of structured activities designed to foster community involvement and skill development. These include educational briefings, registration of participants and mentors, intensive boot camps, and the eventual launch of a social enterprise. This holistic approach ensures that participants are well-equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to sustain and expand their entrepreneurial endeavors.

By initiating this project, UUM and UniMAP are not just addressing immediate community needs but are also laying the groundwork for long-term sustainable development and social empowerment. The Kesiswa Aquaponics Project exemplifies the universities' commitment to innovation, community engagement, and the nurturing of future entrepreneurial leaders.
