CEDI ONLINE: In conjunction with the Korea Global Entrepreneurship Week, the ASEAN Korea Center (AKC) has successfully organised the ASEAN-Korea Youth Innovative Forum which aimed to bring out innovative ideas of young entrepreneurs from Southeast Asian and Korea. Taken place at the Seoul Dragon City Convention Hall, with the theme, ‘Entrepreneurship to Improve the Lives of ASEAN and Korea People’, Enactus UUM team was honoured to be elected as one of the 11 finalists out of 240 applicants across ASEAN countries and Korea itself. The purpose of the competition was to inculcate potential start-up ideas among youth entrepreneurs with the kind of feasible innovation that could enhance the well-being of people in the mentioned region, as well as providing better solution for the problem faced.
During the submission period around September 2018, each participating team was required to submit several tasks for pre-screening purposes, which was assessed by panel of judges from Korea. We have submitted a roughly 1000 words essay explaining our unique idea innovation, a power point slide document for our project business plan and a 3-minute video vividly portraying the execution of our project idea. Representing our Co&Coal project, an innovation of turning the coconut shells waste into coconut charcoal, which has significantly helped the underprivileged community to improve their standard of living has caught the attention of the judges till we were qualified to represent Malaysia and competed against other 10 Asean countries.
For this big event, Asean Korea Center has collaborated with various well known governmental and entrepreneurial body such as Get in The Ring, Science and Technology Policy Institute, Seoul Metropolitan Government, and Korea Entrepreneurship Foundation to host the full day event which comprised of five sessions. The first session was the opening and welcoming speech delivered by the Secretary General of AKC and few other special guests representing each institution. Next was the Asean Korea Young Innovator’s Talk where two successful young entrepreneurs from ASEAN and Korea respectively did the sharing sessions on their entrepreneurship journey, the ups and downs and encouraging the other start-up in entrepreneurship field to continuously work hard and always had strong belief in their dream.
Third session went on with the Start-up Idea Pitching Session by 11 finalists coming all over from ASEAN-Korea. Before the beginning of the pitching session, the introduction video of each team is showing on screen to let judges and investors have a rough understanding on the idea of the project. It then followed up with a 3-minute pitching session and 5 minutes Q&A session for each team. The pitching session gave us an opportunity to introduce and promote the idea of Co&Coal on international stage and provide us a chance to enhance our idea by the guidance from the judges. Co&Coal project manage to get the attention of the judges as its objective is to reduce air pollution issue by fully utilize the coconut shell waste. It is then followed by Awarding Ceremony and the last was Networking Reception as the closing session to end the full day event.
The ASEAN-Korea Youth Innovation Forum has definitely provided Co&Coal a platform to step-up to the international stage carrying the name of Universiti Utara Malaysia and the Cooperative and Entrepreneurial Development institute (CEDI).
